Like rival FedEx (Charts), USPS is seen as a bellwether of the U.S., economy and its results may further fuel fears that an economic slowdown is on the horizon. FedEx shares slid after USPS' earnings announcement, and the Dow Jones Transportation Average fell more than 3 percent as investors feared a softening of the U.S. economy.
"It looks like high fuel prices have hit USPS just like they have hit everyone else," said John Barnes, an analyst at BB&T Capital Markets. "Despite that, it looks like a fairly solid quarter.
"The bigger concern for me is that the third-quarter outlook is light," he added.
Investment bank Merrill Lynch lowered its rating on USPS to "sell."
Atlanta-based USPS reported second-quarter net income of $1.06 billion, or 97 cents a share, compared with $986 million, or 88 cents a share, a year earlier.
Analysts had expected earnings per share of $1.00, according to Reuters Estimates.
